What does a safety relief valve do in a hydrogen system?

A safety relief valve automatically opens when the pressure exceeds a predefined set pressure. This allows excess gas to be safely and controlledly discharged. Once the pressure has dropped sufficiently, the valve closes again.

Safety relief valves can be used throughout the hydrogen value chain, including hydrogen production, storage and transport, as well as industrial installations where hydrogen is used as a process gas or raw material.

Why does hydrogen require special attention?

Hydrogen is an extremely light gas with very small molecules. This makes it particularly important to ensure that the materials used for valves and other components are suitable for hydrogen service.

Operating conditions can also vary considerably between hydrogen applications. Systems may be exposed to high pressures, extremely low temperatures or conditions that require a high discharge capacity. The selection of a safety relief valve should therefore always be based on the specific application and process conditions.

Which safety relief valves does Hitma offer for hydrogen?

One of these solutions is the IMI Bopp & Reuther Si 8 series. These safety relief valves are part of the High Flow series and are designed for applications where high discharge capacity is an important selection criterion.

The Si 8 series offers, among other specifications:

  • connection sizes from 1 to 8 inches;
  • pressure classes from 50# to 2500#;
  • temperatures from -268 °C to 538 °C;
  • set pressures from 0.5 barg to 414 barg;
  • suitability for vapours and gases, including hydrogen, as well as steam, liquids and two-phase applications.

The series is designed in accordance with API 526 and manufactured in accordance with ASME Section VIII and PED.

Selecting a safety relief valve based solely on pipe size or operating pressure is not sufficient. The valve must also have enough capacity to discharge the required amount of hydrogen in the event of an overpressure situation.
